With the majority of the population gone, whether by becoming infected, being eaten, or evacuated, the primary motive of these games is to survive. One of the main reasons gamers love the zombie genre is because the idea of having to survive based on your ingenuity is resourcefulness and instincts such as making weapons, gathering resources, crafting items, hiding, and fleeing. 8. Dead Island 2

Initial Release Date: December 31, 2021

Dead Island assures players zombie-killing action of the same caliber as the first two games in this series. Announced in E3 2014, this game was postponed multiple times due to changes in developer teams. For now, we know that it is currently developed by Deep Silver Dambuster Studios and can be expected to release on December 31, 2021. Apart from the action, the game showcases a series of real-life locations across California. Also, the game will have an explained crafting system and a co-op mode allowing up to 8 players to play together.  

7. Undying

Undying is a story-focused zombie survival game where players play as a Mom who becomes infected with the zombie virus. While she is still transforming, she needs to teach her son Cody valuable survival skills to survive in this world. From teaching skills like building shelter and cooking, gathering and refining minerals to feeding on the undead bodies, the Mom is determined to protect her son even if she needs to use her own infected body as camouflage.

The only indie game on this list, A Way to Be Dead is an asymmetrical multiplayer (4 vs 1) game. With deep horror aspects, the game allows players to play as either one of the four survivors or a crazy infected doctor on the hunt to bring them down. The game is much anticipated as it provides a similar multiplayer idea as Dead by Deadlight but with slightly better environments and a bit of change in gameplay. The closed beta phase of the game is over and the number of people who participated in that is looking quite good.

5. Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 was announced in E3 2018 but it was postponed due to the pandemic. It was set to initially release in Jan 2020 but it was delayed to 2021. Set after the events of the first game, it introduces players to a new protagonist named Aiden Caldwell. Aiden is an infected survivor and he needs to use his expert survival and combat skills to escape from the zombies while gaining new allies. The environment in this game is very dynamic allowing players to move around swiftly. They can also swing from high ropes and run past rooftops with ease.

4. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Quarantine

A first-person tactical shooter game in the zombie genre, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Quarantine was announced in E3 2019. This “3-player tactical co-op FPS” will be set in the future of the current rainbow six universes. Players have to team up against a new breed of mutated alien parasite. This parasite is set to infect hosts and their surroundings. Players have to fight hordes of opponents and claw their way out of high-risk, unpredictable missions. This is one of the most anticipated games in 2021.

3. Evil Dead: The Game

Coming from the iconic Evil Dead franchise, the players get to play as Ash Williams or his friends in a co-op or PVP multiplayer experience. The game also allows players to play as Kandarian Demon flying over the map and controlling Deadites, the environment, and the survivors to hunt Ash Williams and his friends. The game showcases the look and feel of the original Evil Dead game with realistic visuals and a physics-based gore system.
