RELEASE DATE & PLATFORMS:
Resident Evil Village is going to be released on May 7th, 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X & Series S, and Google Stadia.
Back in January 2021, the free-to-play Maiden demo was released for Resident Evil Village, exclusively for PlayStation 5. Unlike the Resident Evil village, this Demo is set in an earlier time period and it features a completely new character named Maiden who is trapped inside Castle Dimitrescu. The Maiden demo was relatively short, and it did not showcase any combat scenario. However, it did give us a glimpse of the gameplay, the game’s incredible attention to details, and the vampire lady who is known as the Lady Dimitrescu.
Following the Maiden demo, developer Capcom released two more PlayStation exclusive demos as well, known as the Village demo, and the Castle demo on April 17th and April 24th respectively. These were time-limited demos that showcased their respective areas.
A new time-limited Resident Evil Village demo will also be available on all platforms as well. Capcom has confirmed that the new demo will be released on May 1st and May 2nd (depending on the region) and will be available for 24 hours only. Players will be able to play the demo for up to 60 minutes, exploring both the Village and the infamous Castle. You can check out the demo schedule below.
Resident Evil Village takes place a few years after the events Resident Evil VII: Biohazard. Ethan and his wife Mia Winters have been living peacefully following the Baker mansion incident, and they even had a child together named Rosemary. However, their world turns upside down when BSAA Captain Chris Redfield shows up, kidnaps Rosemary, and apparently murders Mia in front of Ethan.
From thereon Ethan somehow ends up in a mysterious, Gothic Village, in search of his kidnapped daughter. However, much to Ethan’s surprise the Village is full of mysterious creatures and sinister characters who want to hunt him down.
GAMEPLAY & COMBAT:
Much like Resident Evil VII: Biohazard, Resident Evil Village will also feature Ethan from a first-person perspective. But, unlike its prequel, Ethan looks much more comfortable now in terms of weapons handling and combat scenarios. Ethan can now even block incoming attacks to reduce their damage considerably and can use his environment to his advantage as well.
Despite these combat changes, RE Village is still a survival-horror title at its core. Hence, you can expect a lot more hiding and running around, as the stalking enemies (which we will come to in a bit) will make a return. Also, just like RE VII, you can expect a lot of environmental puzzles as well.
From the hooded zombie-like creatures to the terrifying Vampire Lady, Resident Evil Village has a diverse range of enemies.
Apparently, the village is ruled by a mysterious woman named Mother Miranda who is worshipped by the villagers. She appears to be the main villainous character in the game and has four main servants under her control and all four of them will be playing a pivotal role in RE Village, however, apart from it, nothing much has been revealed about Mother Miranda.
Lady Dimitrescu is one of her servants, and she is the mistress of Castle Dimitrescu, which she controls with the help of three vampire sisters Bela, Cassandra, and Daniela. Lady Dimitrescu is one of the most prominent faces that we have seen thus far, and by the looks of it, she will be hunting for Ethan in a way similar to Mr. X of Resident Evil 2, or Jack Baker of Resident Evil VII: Biohazard.
Another intriguing character is Heisenberg, who carries a large hammer and is able to control the objects in the environment. Though it is not confirmed, it is speculated that Heisenberg is the brother of Lady Dimitrescu.
Apart from them, Werewolves are known as the Lycans, and hooded zombie-like creatures will also make their presence felt in the game.
Though not confirmed yet, it is also speculated that Chris Redfield might be an antagonist as well, and judging from his actions in the game’s trailer, he does not look very friendly towards Ethan. After all, he kills Mia in front of Ethan and kidnaps their baby daughter Rosemary!
Surely, there will be many more villainous characters in RE Village, but as of this writing, they have not been revealed yet.
INVENTORY MANAGEMENT & ITEMS:
The much-anticipatedTetris-style inventory management system of Resident Evil 4 makes a return here. In Resident Evil Village, you get an attaché case inventory where you can maneuver your items to fit into grids, to save as much space as possible. Crafting, as usual, will be available as well. This time around Ethan also carries a personal journal of his own which consists of notes, doodles and it also keeps track of your progression.
Another major new addition is that Ethan can now hunt certain animals of the village. These animals will drop meat, which can be crafted and consumed to get permanent buffs.
DUKE THE MERCHANT
Duke the merchant will be making several appearances at random spots throughout the game. At his shop, Ethan can not only buy new weapons, ammunition, and supplies but will also be able to upgrade his existing weapons as well. You can also sell certain collectibles and other items at his shop to earn in-game currency (Lei). Plus, at his shop, you will be able to access the Duke’s kitchen, which contains several crafting recipes for health upgrades and other stuff.
THE MERCENARY MODE & RE: VERSE:
Apart from the single-player campaign, RE Village comes with the much-anticipated Mercenary mode and the online-only RE: Verse.
The fan-favorite mercenary mode will be making a return to Resident Evil Village. This is a fast-paced, time-limited mode where you have to kill a certain number of enemies to gain points and to earn bonus time.
Plus, as a celebration of the 25-years of the Resident Evil franchise, Capcom has announced the RE: Verse. It is essentially a four to six-player deathmatch battle that features fan-favorite characters from the last three Resident Evil games.
