He received it from an old friend and used its prowess numerous times in the show, mainly to save others. For the majority, he only wielded one Mangekyou Sharingan in his left eye, but at the end of the show, the time came when he received the Double Mangekyou Sharingan (DMS) and activated his Susanoo, the only non-Uchiha to do that ever.

What are the disadvantages of using the Sharingan in Naruto for the Non-Uchihas?

The true potential of the eyes can only be unlocked by an actual Uchiha. Even Kakashi’s Mangekyou activated because Obito’s did and the eyes were linked. The second part is that these eyes take enormous chakra, especially from non-Uchihas for its use, and they don’t have that much chakra pool or management to consistently use their prowess. Another disadvantage is that the non-Uchihas can not activate or deactivate the eyes, thus their Sharingan always stays on. Which constantly drains their chakra.
